Replacement Windows in South Dakota
Current incentive status, energy-code requirements, and local market research for South Dakota homeowners replacing windows and doors.
Rebates & incentives
The federal window tax credit (25C) ended for projects placed in service after December 31, 2025. If your windows were installed in 2025, you can still claim it on your 2025 return — but for new projects there is no federal window credit. State and utility programs are now the main source of window incentives.
South Dakota declined its IRA Home Energy Rebates allocation, notifying DOE in 2024 that it would not administer the HOMES or HEAR programs, and its roughly $68 million was redistributed to participating states. As a result there is no state-run whole-home rebate (the usual route by which windows could qualify) for South Dakota homeowners as of mid-2026, so residents must rely on utility programs. Confirm current status with the Governor's Office of Economic Development in case the state reverses course.
- Black Hills Energy Residential Rebates (SD). Black Hills Energy's South Dakota residential rebates cover heat pumps, central air conditioning, heat pump water heaters, smart thermostats and select appliances; windows and insulation are not rebated. (Black Hills Energy (blackhillsenergy.com))
- NorthWestern Energy E+ (SD). NorthWestern's Efficiency Plus (E+) offerings in South Dakota are limited compared with its Montana programs and center on HVAC, water heating and weatherization rather than replacement windows; verify current South Dakota eligibility directly. Energy code
South Dakota has no mandatory statewide residential energy code; state law references the 2009 IECC as a voluntary standard and larger cities have adopted newer IECC editions locally, so window U-factor requirements vary by jurisdiction. Its northern IECC zone 5B-6A climate favors low-U-factor, high-performance glazing.
