Replacement Windows in Mobile, Alabama
Mobile is Gulf Coast Alabama — hurricanes, extreme humidity, salt air, and wind-borne debris rules define window replacement before energy math does. Of the city's housing units, 64.8% predate 1980 and the median year built is 1974. Mobile County is ENERGY STAR Southern / IECC 2A: low SHGC for endless cooling seasons, plus impact or shutters where code maps require them. Covered from RBA Gulf Coast territory. This is not Huntsville's inland Dixie Alley story — it is a coastal opening-protection market.
Short answer
In Mobile, a standard replacement window (double-hung, casement or slider) typically costs $495–$2,805 installed. Bay and bow windows run $2,465–$7,890+, and a sliding patio door $1,480–$4,930. Frame material and the glass package decide where a project lands in that range.

What drives window decisions in Mobile
- Southern / 2A: U-factor ≤ 0.32 and SHGC ≤ 0.23 under ENERGY STAR v7.0; SHGC owns cooling bills.
- Gulf hurricane / WBDR exposure: impact glazing or approved shutters under Florida-style coastal logic via Alabama coastal code maps — verify by parcel.
- Salt air and humidity punish cheap hardware; historic districts can constrain street-facing products.
- Alabama Power does not rebate windows standalone; ADECA IRA pending; 25C expired.

Efficiency requirements for Mobile's climate
Mobile sits in the ENERGY STAR Southern zone (IECC zone 2A (hot, humid), Mobile County). Under the v7.0 specification, qualifying windows need a U-factor of 0.32 or lower and an SHGC of 0.23 or lower. Cooling-dominated climate: the priority is keeping solar heat out — a low SHGC saves more than an ultra-low U-factor here.

What replacement windows cost here
Coastal impact packages cost more than inland Alabama standard glass. Itemize product approval, DP rating, labor, and permit. Federal 25C is gone; Alabama Power has no reliable window rebate. Payback is insurance, storm resilience, and cooling savings.

Rebates & incentives in Alabama
The federal window tax credit (25C) ended for projects placed in service after December 31, 2025. If your windows were installed in 2025, you can still claim it on your 2025 return — but for new projects there is no federal window credit. State and utility programs are now the main source of window incentives.
Alabama's IRA Home Energy Rebates are administered by ADECA (Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs), which as of mid-2026 still lists the HOMES and HEAR programs as under development with no confirmed date for when households can access rebates. If and when they open, windows would generally qualify only through the whole-home HOMES modeled-savings pathway rather than as a direct rebate. Confirm current status with ADECA before relying on it.
- Alabama Power (Southern Company) residential rebates. Alabama Power's current residential rebates target smart thermostats, heat pumps, water heaters, and EV chargers — not replacement windows. Aggregator sites that show a "$600 windows" figure are echoing the now-expired federal 25C credit, not an Alabama Power offer. Do not count on a direct utility window rebate here. Alabama's residential energy code, adopted by the Alabama Energy and Residential Codes Board, is based on the 2015 IECC but weakened by state amendments (roughly better than 2009 IECC, short of full 2015 IECC); the Huntsville/Madison County metro sits in IECC climate zone 3A, a mixed-humid climate where cooling loads and solar heat gain drive window spec.

Mobile window replacement FAQ
›Do Mobile windows have to be impact-rated?
Often yes on mapped coastal / high-wind parcels — or approved shutters. Confirm your address with City of Mobile or Mobile County building officials and current wind maps. Ask for product approval numbers on the exact unit.
›What efficiency numbers should windows hit?
ENERGY STAR Southern: U-factor 0.32 or lower and SHGC 0.23 or lower. Cooling dominates; read NFRC and structural ratings separately.
›Are there rebates?
Federal 25C expired December 31, 2025. ADECA IRA programs were still under development as of mid-2026; Alabama Power does not offer a simple window rebate. Budget without counting on incentives.
›How is Mobile different from Huntsville or Birmingham?
Coast vs inland. Mobile is Southern 2A hurricane country; north Alabama is South-Central 3A tornado country. Impact and salt-air hardware matter here in a way they do not inland.
