Replacement Windows in Maine
Current incentive status, energy-code requirements, and local market research for Maine homeowners replacing windows and doors.
Rebates & incentives
The federal window tax credit (25C) ended for projects placed in service after December 31, 2025. If your windows were installed in 2025, you can still claim it on your 2025 return — but for new projects there is no federal window credit. State and utility programs are now the main source of window incentives.
Maine is generally a national efficiency leader, but its IRA Home Energy Rebates rolled out unevenly: Efficiency Maine (with the Governor's Energy Office) launched HEAR in September 2024 only for mobile homes and affordable multifamily, while the whole-home HOMES track — the pathway most relevant to windows — remained pending DOE approval and not open to standard single-family homeowners as of mid-2026. Confirm current single-family availability before relying on it.
- Efficiency Maine weatherization (insulation & air sealing) rebates. Efficiency Maine's weatherization rebates cover insulation and air sealing at 40–80% of project cost (up to $4,000–$8,000 by income), require a registered vendor and before/after blower-door testing, and do not pay for replacement windows. Windows are treated as a lower-priority envelope measure here; the money follows insulation and air sealing. Confirm current tiers and terms. Energy code
Maine's MUBEC (Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code) moved its baseline to the 2021 IECC effective April 7, 2025, and the Portland metro (Portland and South Portland) enforces a stretch code exceeding the 2021 IECC by about 15%; Portland sits in IECC climate zone 6A, where cold-climate U-factor and air-tightness requirements make high-performance windows a real compliance factor.
